When was the last time?
When was the last time you walked in the rain and enjoyed every bit of it? Do you remember how as a child you played in the rain and splashed water with your little feet? And how you were delighted, oblivious of any risks to your health, until you had someone call out your name to get out of the rain (mostly an adult cut short your fun, right?)
I walked in the rain this morning. I was not worried about my hair getting all wet or my body for that matter. I have always wanted to walk in the rain (though I still plan to walk in the rain along a beautiful beach one of these fine days). Surprisingly, I did not feel the wetness. Instead, I enjoyed wiping the rain off my face and licking some of the rain water, and looking up so that it would rain in my eyes. The only thing I wish I could have done which I did not do was to run up and down gleefully and allow myself the liberty of being a child once again but I was scared of what the men and women taking shelter under the trees lined up the street would think of me.
As I walked in the rain, I realized as adults we have stifled the child in us. Somewhere within us we have become stiff, boring and unadventurous. We grow up and we stuff this little part of us in our "adulthood" and then slowly we begin to wonder what happened to us.
Today I would like us to take time and just think for a moment through the questions below (not exhaustive but should get us started):
- When was the last time you walked or ran in the rain?
- When was the last time you went camping?
- When was the last time you went swimming?
- When was the last time you attended a concert and screamed your head off?
- When was the last time you went to a game and cheered your team until your voice became hoarse?
- When was the last time you met up with good old friends over a home-cooked meal and just talked and talked and talked?
- When was the last time you held hands with your loved one and smudged kisses on his or her face?
- When was the last time you looked into your loved one's eyes and told him or her that you love her or him?
- When was the last time you went to Sunday School or a kindergarten or a children's gathering and just sang those nursery rhymes off key?
- When was the last time, as a mother, or as a father, you sat down on the floor with your kids and painted with them, played with them, and just let them know that you love them to bits?
- When was the last time you went for a team building exercise and instead of standing aloof as your friends, family or colleagues had fun, you immersed yourself in the activities and had so much fun?
- When was the last time you went out on a date, even with a good friend, to a good restaurant and you enjoyed a good healthy meal?
- When was the last time you went to bed at 8:30 p.m. and woke up refreshed at 6:30 a.m.?
- When was the last time you read a novel?
- When was the last time you went to a theatre next to you to watch a good movie?
The list could go on and on but you get the idea. Let's celebrate who we are coz there comes a time when any body movement brings pain and when we will all depart from this earth.
I'm already thinking about what to do next! And oh, don't worry about what people think so long as it's within the confines of decency, love, grace and the fear of God.
Maybe bungee jumping .... help me God!
